Q: Where is Dunk Island?

A: Dunk Island is a Queensland island located off the north eastern coast of Australia, on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. See our map of Dunk Island.

Q: How do you get to Dunk Island?

A: Access to Dunk Island is via Cairns - we can arrange flights between Cairns and Dunk Island. Another option for arrival is coach/car hire and then water transfer from mission beach. More information on how to get to Dunk Island.

Q: What airport is Dunk Island close to?

A: Dunk Island has its own airport. Regular flights depart from major Australian capital cities for Dunk Island (via Cairns airport) with Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Blue. Hinterland Aviation operates the 45 minute connecting flight between Cairns and Dunk Island twice daily. Private charter flights to Dunk Island are also available upon request. Q: How far is the Great Barrier Reef from Dunk Island?

A: The World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef is only a 1 hour and 15 minute cruise away.

Q: Why is the area called the ‘Family Islands’?

A: The name ‘Family Islands’ comes from Captain Cook himself. On June 8, 1770, Captain James Cook sailed the Endeavour past the Family Islands; he named Dunk Island after Lord Montague Dunk - the Earl of Sandwich and the First Lord of the British Admiralty. Cook called Dunk the ‘Father Isle’, nearby Bedarra Island the ‘Mother Isle’ and the remaining 14 islands ‘The Children’ – hence the ‘Family Islands’.

Q: How big is Dunk Island?

A: Dunk Island is six kilometres long and two kilometres wide, and lies four kilometres east of mainland Queensland, off Mission Beach. See our map of Dunk Island.

Q: I want to go out to the reef, can that be arranged?

A: Reef trips and other activities can be arranged directly on the resort. Additional charges may apply. Get to the Reef on our Great Barrier Reef Cruise.

Q: What reefs are close to Dunk Island?

A: From Dunk Island you can visit the stunning horseshoe-shaped Eddy Reef. You can get there by a Great Barrier Reef Cruise trip or arrange a private charter flight to see the amazing Eddy Reef.

Q: Are there jelly fish?

A: The jelly fish season is over the summer months; jelly fish suits are available to use from Watersports. To date we have not had any incidents.

Q: What will the weather be like when I am there?

A: The weather varies according to the time of year, although there is no guarantee. On average, temperatures range from 24-30 degrees. See our weather & climate page for more information.

Q: Do you cater for specific dietary requirements, e.g. Vegetarian?

A: Certainly. If you do have specific requirements, please advise us well in advance so our chefs are aware and can cater for you accordingly.

Q: Does the resort have Wi-Fi?

A: The resort does have Wi-Fi access in certain areas. We also have 3G iPads available for guest use (minimal charges apply).

A: There are so many fun activities on Dunk Island for all age groups. Further information can be found under holiday activities.

Q: Is there a Kids Club?

A: Yes, it's fantastic for the kids! Visit our kids club page.

Q: What ages do the Kids Club take?

A: The kids club takes children aged 3 - 12 years.

Q: What is the pricing for Kids Club?

A: $45.00 per child for one session, $35.00 per child for two sessions.

Q: My child is under 3 years - is there any babysitting available?

A: Yes, there is a babysitting service, subject to availability. Pricing is $25.00 per hour.

Q: What does your accommodation rate include?

A: Our accommodation rate includes full buffet breakfast; from 1st April our rates will be inclusive of all meals.

A: We are striving to be a recognised leader in sustainable environmental tourism practice. We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Through a series of initiatives across our resorts we are focusing on energy management – reducing electricity consumption and LPG usage – and waste management techniques to reduce disposal to landfill.
