As you are aware, both Dunk and Bedarra Island will be closed until April 2012 while we repair the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Yasi. This has given us the opportunity to reflect and really understand the essence of each island and what makes them such special destinations.

Part of the soul of the island is it’s amazing natural beauty which we will of-course look after and preserve. There is a wonderful diversity of plant and animal life on our National Park Rainforest Island and of course the spectacular Great Barrier Reef nearby.

Dunk has a rich and diverse heritage. It’s these memories and experiences that make Dunk unique. As we begin the rebuild process we’d love you to share with us, some of your fond memories of your time on Dunk Island. We also wanted to share with you our memories and history in this newsletter.

Thank you for your patience and kind understanding during this period of closure. We look forward to sharing the magic of Dunk Island and Bedarra when we re-open.

Previously a Journalist and Senior Editor with the Townsville Daily Bulletin for fifteen years, Banfield let the tranquillity of this unspoilt tropical paradise weave its magic and he lived on Dunk Island for the remaining 26 years of his life.

Over a period of time they cleared four acres of land for a plantation of fruit and vegetables. Combined with their chickens, cows and goats as well as the abundance of seafood and mangrove vegetation, they lived very self-sufficiently. Fascinated by Dunk Island’s flora and fauna Banfield meticulously recorded his observations and went on to write a series of articles about island life under the pseudonym Rob Krusoe. He was further inspired to write a full-length book entitled ‘Confessions of a Beachcomber’ which was published in 1908. The book became a celebrated text for romantics and escapists and established Dunk Island’s reputation as an exotic island paradise. In the ensuing years, Banfield wrote several other books about Dunk including ‘My Tropical Isle’ in 1911 and ‘Tropic Days’ in 1918. In these he shared the secrets of nature that he had uncovered and described the customs and legends of the Aboriginal people on the island. E J Banfield passed away on 2 June 1923 and his final book ‘Last Leaves from Dunk’ was published posthumously in 1925.

Today both are buried on the trail to Mt Kootaloo. The tombstone of Banfield’s wife, Bertha, was added to the grave after her death in 1933.

At the time, the Banfield bungalow provided the basis for the beginning of a resort. His son Hugo Brassey then capitalised on family connections with the rich and famous and ran a successful tourist resort until World War II when the island was annexed by the Royal Australian Air Force because of its small but valuable airfield. Secret radar equipment was installed near the island’s highest point, Mt Kootaloo, from where the Battle of the Coral Sea was waged.

The island then went through a succession of owners. In 1956, Gordon & Kathleen Stynes purchased the island and relocated their family from Victoria to Dunk Island. The Stynes Family then set about to redevelop and upgrade the resort’s facilities to establish the island as a tourist destination. As a result, Dunk Island became a popular destination for celebrities including Sean Connery, Henry Ford II and former Australian Prime Ministers Harold Holt and Gough Whitlam. The Stynes Family owned and operated the island and resort until 1964 when it was sold to Eric McIlree, founder of Avis Rent-A-Car. In 1969, the movie ‘The Age of Consent’ starring James Mason and Helen Mirren was shot on location on Dunk and neighbouring Bedarra Island, adding to its international appeal.

The resort at that time was small and had a mere 36 rooms. But P&O and TAA had a vision for the future of Dunk, developing the resort and re-launching it in July 1978 with a series of festivals, including the Bill Fish Tournament and a concert performed by the Supremes, led by Mary Wilson.

In December 1997 P&O once again purchased the resort and, taking up where they left off, completely refurbished the guest and staff accommodation, Kids Club, airport, reception and resort facilities. The Plantation Lounge and Beachcomber Restaurant also underwent a major transformation, whilst the General Manager’s residence emerged from the refurbishment as the breathtaking ‘Spa of Peace & Plenty’.

In 2003, refurbishment of guest accommodation continued and Dunk’s dream of having a 9 hole golf course (offering spectacular views of the local region) came to fruition. The Spa of Peace & Plenty was also extended, to better meet the needs of resort guests seeking to nurture their mind, body, and spirits. In 2004 there were significant changes, including the addition of Bayview Suites at the far eastern end of Brammo Bay, and the re-invention of the Cascade Pool and ‘The Terrace Restaurant’. In July 2004, Voyages Hotels & Resorts took over Dunk Island and centralized the island management in Sydney along with a range of other tourism properties in their portfolio.

On 21st September 2009, an affiliate of the McCall MacBain Foundation became the proud new owners of Dunk Island and the exclusive 5 star neighboring resort of Bedarra. Plans are to continue revitalizing both island resorts bringing them up to their quintessential best, so that the magic of Dunk is never lost.

You are probably aware that Tropical Cyclone Yasi passed over Bedarra and Dunk Island on 2 and 3 February 2011. The cyclone unfortunately caused significant damage to both properties, which have been forced to close temporarily in order to repair the damage.

Since the closure we have been conducting extensive specialist assessments. These assessments are still in progress and they are identifying the full extent of the rectification works required.

Notwithstanding this lengthy assessment process, we have commenced the clean-up of both resorts and work is progressing quickly in this area. This work is being performed by a large group of specialist contractors (including arborists and landscapers) with assistance from our own staff. Our underlying objective is to retain as much of the natural tropical rainforest vegetation as possible – our most precious asset.

For both properties the rectification works will encompass all areas including guest facilities, essential infrastructure, landscaping, vegetation, ground works and staff facilities – setting new benchmarks in tropical island resort life.
At the same time, we will be reviewing each resorts overall guest experience. This starts with each resort’s “essence” or DNA – what is each resort about?

The guest experience starts from the time guests arrive in the region and transfer to the island, and continues until the time they step off that transfer on the way to their next destination. This review will involve extensive consultation with our trade partners and our past guests. Between now and when we reopen, we will be making some exciting announcements about each resorts guest experience.

The multi-million dollar rectification program will include architectural fixtures and finishes and updated furniture and fittings, ensuring that the facilities reflect each resort’s underlying “essence”. The resorts will each offer a stylish tropical coastal feel, designed to enhance their rainforest and beach setting.

At this point both properties will re-open on 1 April 2012, and will be accepting reservations for this period and beyond in the New Year. We thank everyone for their patience and kind understanding during this period of closure and look forward to welcoming guests back to Dunk Island and Bedarra when we re-open.

revealed details of a $10 million upgrade and enhancement program designed to return the
two popular Queensland island properties to the top position in their respective markets.

Rupert Greenhough, chairman of Hideaway Resorts, said that the extensive upgrade
program at Dunk would be largely completed by Easter 2011.

At Dunk Island Resort, around $6.5 million of structural and interior design changes are underway. “Liveability and comfort across the board are the key factors of the refurbishment, as well as offering more accommodation options for groups and families in the Garden Cabanas and Lower Banfields,” says Rupert Greenhough. “For couples, the newly romantic Upper Banfield spa rooms with daybeds overlooking the gardens will provide a lower price point alternative to the Beachfront Rooms and premium Beachfront Suites.” Updates to common areas include a soft refurbishment of restaurant and bar areas and new lighting, air conditioning and extra seating.

In response to feedback received, Dunk Island will be changing its tariff to full board from 1st
April 2011, with rates including lunch/dinner as well as bed/breakfast.

“Travel industry and guest feedback received during the past year we have owned the resort
have lead us to this full board concept, which we believe will enhance the guest experience
in tandem with the resort’s full refurbishment,” said Rupert Greenhough.

Does Santa really visit only once a year? Not on Dunk Island! Santa was making fleeting appearances around the resort for the whole week before Christmas it was almost like playing “Where’s Wally”! I woke up one morning to see Santa coming across the golf course on a horse, another afternoon I looked up and he was on the roof of our Plantation Bar and one particular day I’m sure he was just testing out the “toys” he was going to give everyone but we even spotted him playing on our water trampoline.
Christmas was a real joy and a beautiful time we got to share with so many lovely families. We just managed to get over all the delicious Christmas ham and pudding ready for New Years Eve.
What happens on New Year’s Eve on Dunk? Well, this year I had the pleasure of hosting drinks for our wonderful guests at the beginning of the night – the theme was black and bling! So many great outfits and our plantation bar had even turned into quite the stage and center piece of the night. We had continuous music all night with two excellent live entertainers, who had us all dancing the night away… The clock struck 12 and we made our resolutuions… here is my list of New Years Resolutions:
1. I must got to the Barrier Reef and try diving
2. I must try wakeboarding
3. I must go to Michelle’s Pilates Class
4. I must book myself in to the Spa of Peace and Plenty not just for a massage but a complete indulgence massage and facial
5. I must take advantage of the rainforest and go for more walks
6. I must go to Mt Kootaloo
7. I must spend a day at Muggy Muggy Beach with a picnic and a good book
8. I must organise a cheese platter and watch the sunset over the 9th hole
9. I must go for a horse ride
10. I must remember what a beautiful, place I live in and appreciate it each day by living and breathing every little bit it has to offer.

Each year Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world, with the sole aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.

Men sporting Movember moustaches, known as Mo Bros, become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts. The rules are simple; register online at Movember.com and start the month of Movember clean shaven, before growing a Mo.

Money raised in Australia is shared equally between programs targeting prostate cancer and male depression. Funds are committed to our men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue – the national depression initiative and the Movember Foundation. Together, the three channels work to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world class programs in the fields of research, education, support, and awareness.

We on Dunk Island have participated in Movember for 3 years running and this year had what was our most successful fundrasing with a total of $4,726 raised to the cause. We had raffles with fantastic prizes donated from some our local businesses including skydiving, white water rafting and even jungle surfing.

We had several fundrasing activities througout the month which included a boys only fishing trip out to the reef with Alistair Pike our local fishing guide from Mission Beach, but our real winner was our end of Movember Masquerade Party which had our resident musician Matt Zarb playing. What a hit and what a night! If anyone is ever thinking about a wow function the Jetty Cafe is the place to do it…. Tiki torches surrounded the tables which were on the sand, fish and chips, fairy lights in the trees and a magic sunset – could you ask for anything more??

Thank you again to the local businesses who assisted the fundrasing efforts – it was very much appreciated.

If you would like to know more about Movember or even to donate to our team, please follow this link.. link http://au.movember.com/mospace/666052/

One of the many special things on Dunk Island Resort (especially for the budding botanists, gardeners or in general anyone who loves the special touches) are our unique and beautiful flower displays. Most guests who holiday on Dunk Island have a picture of the “lovers” pond, with the couple holding freshly picked flowers in their interlocked hands, or a pic of the other eye-catching displays throughout the resort (one guest’s child aptly referred to these displays as “fairy homes”).

Dunk Island has so many natural and pretty flowers to choose from, each day has something different in store.

The flower display tradition was started by a lady of the name Moncia McBride, when she began working at the resort in the 1980’s. She looked after these ‘fairy homes’ for many, many years and guests to this day still ask of her and whether she is still doing the wonderful arrangements.

Mon passed away a year ago this week, and we wanted to take the time to celebrate the tradition that she created in the flower displays as well as the lady herself. If you knew Mon, or remember her flower displays – raise your glasses this Friday to a much loved lady who was somewhat of an icon at this resort.

Cheers Mon!

One of the many benefits of working on a tropical island resort is the special moments you get to witness! Weddings, proposals, honeymoons, celebrations, birthday parties, live musicians and the amazing people you get to meet every day from all parts of the world…
Last week we had a truly special day – Camp Quality came to Dunk Island Resort. Camp Quality is the children’s family cancer charity that believes in bringing optimism and happiness to the lives of children and families affected by cancer through fun therapy. They believe laughter is the best medicine.
We had 150 kids and families in total all here to experience the magic of Dunk Island…
What a day they had! Some learnt how to kayak for the first time, how to use a catamaran, sit on a horse and have a led horse ride along the beach… and even learn to wakeboard!
Their day started with face painting, then horse rides, a tour of our farm where Mr Squiggles the friendly pig was a big hit with the kids, then on to croquet and we even managed to squeeze in a coconut opening demonstration. For the kids and big kids who were more about the watersports they soaked it up down at the Jetty cafe with the water trampoline, pedal boats, tube rides, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and catamaran lessons.
At lunch time they enjoyed a delicious special buffet lunch and the buzz and excitement was contagious.
We all feel so privileged to have been able to provide this experience for these kids and look forward to doing it again next year.

Please note: for the privacy of the kids and families involved we have only included pictures of our famous Clown Issa, Gus the watersports supervisor and Michelle the newly appointed chief face painter.

Dunk Island has been host to many special occasions including beach weddings, romantic honeymoons, celebrations and engagements.

Last week I was lucky enough to assist a dear friend in organising his proposal to his girlfriend of many years…

Him and his soon-to-be-fiancé were booked into the Spa of Peace & Plenty for a couples massage and a deluxe facial. We were considering where and how he would propose and, the perfect place sprang to mind. The resort spa has a beautiful big concrete bath sunken in the ground outside and is simply a must for anyone looking for that extra special zone out. The lovely ladies of the spa filled the bath for this beautiful couple, sprinkled the milk powder in and spread some rose petals around.

The bath has a little rest area outside where you can sit peacefully admiring the rainforest.

We had also organised a delicious bottle of champagne and some chocolate dipped strawberries… so the mood was set.

The terror of getting the ring in to the room without her knowing was all quickly forgotten after he heard the sound of “yes, I will marry you” and joyful screams and tears of course!

The afternoon then became one of celebration with the happily engaged couple sharing a magical beachside dining experience with their newly acquainted friends who happened to be celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary…. it was just warm and fuzzy feelings all over! The girls in the restaurant had set a beautiful beachside table. Watching the sun set on the Great Barrier Reef while listening to the backing sounds of the live musicians (Fingerprint Duo) turned the evening into a truly memorable occasion for both happy couples.

I’m sure it was one romantic Queensland Island holiday they will never forget.

Wow, we have had a huge week here on Dunk Island…

We were lucky enough to share dinner on Friday night with 100 of our nearest and dearest friends in what culminated in the return of the “pool party”, imagine the Cascade pool all lit up, floating candles, DJ pumping the tunes and what was some pretty awesome “world tastes” on the buffet. What a great evening!

Just when we thought we had recovered, we remembered Melbourne Cup! We may not be in Melbourne but we know that the Melbourne Cup is the race that stops the nation! On Monday night, our carpenter Pip took to the stage at the Plantation Bar to try his hand at auctioneering – what a winner that was….No more need for carpentry, Pip has found a new career with the calcutta taking close to $1500!!! Who would have thought?

With the excitement of the auction, and the impending race all of our happy guests and staff returned to their rooms for a quiet night in…

Cup day came, and boy the weather was more than fantastic – sunny and hot! At least we knew a pool was close by throughout the day! Our Farm Manager Kevin was running some horse tricks out the front of the restaurant (what a true horseman he is), the flags were up, the staff were in their racing clothes be it jockey outfits or their sunday finest and the guests were soaking the sun, atmosphere and vibe…

We enjoyed the sounds of Fingerprint our resident band while we were enjoying our buffet lunch, it was a huge lunch but some of us managed to find our way to the lawn and play some champagne croquet – it is all pretty civilised here on Dunk Island. Fashions on the field commenced right after that, and all of our departments entered. We had some hard hats with taps and hammers screwed down for maintenance, registration cards and maps for front office – but not one department could beat the very spectacular hat that gardens made… we didn’t have a chance really!

No sooner had we finished the fashions, when we heard the hooves and smelt the smell of horses up close. The lines were set and the horses were ready for their race up the front beach, Steve our boat driver, Hayley our Spa Manager, Ian our gardener and of course our local horse loving folk from the farm Ali and Kevin were all decked out in their colours. The guests and staff were crammed into the viewing area – I think there may have even been some friendly bets between friends on who would win… Boom they were off and racing, the crowd were cheering them on and little Aly from the farm streaked to the front – of course Aly’s dream in life is to become a professional jockey and after seeing her race – we think she probably will!

The race on the beach was almost enough for us but then we all remembered the real reason we were enjoying the day… not just the good weather of course but the Melbourne Cup – The big screen was set and we all stood in there cheering our horses on, that race does go for a long time though doesnt it? Americain trailed to the first position and some very loud screams were heard by 2 ladies who seemed to be quite excited by the win, not to mention myluckyday… seems they had gone halfs in the calcutta and somehow managed to jag the 1st and 2nd – we hope you enjoyed the day ladies!

We had a througouhly enjoyable day sampling the specials at the bar – Mango Bellini to die for, and Kir Royal certainly had us feeling “regal”… I noticed we had some special souvenirs for people to take home at the bar as well. When they bought 2 champagne glasses which even have our logo on them they got refills throughout the day for $5.00 – BARGAIN!!!

Thank god the smells of the resteraunt started coming through, after a day of excitement the kitchen really pulled through with their new special of takeaway Pizzas – who needs Domino’s with chef’s like we have here.

What a day, we can’t wait for next year!
